Course story

Cherry Hills sits at altitude outside Denver, which means the ball travels and the first hole becomes reachable from the tee. In the final round of the 1960 US Open, Arnold Palmer drove the green, made birdie and shot 65 to come from seven back, which is the round that built his reputation and arguably modern tournament golf with it. Jack Nicklaus, then an amateur, and Ben Hogan were both in that same championship. William Flynn's course is tree-lined and conventional in the best sense, with a creek in play and greens that hold firm in the dry Colorado air.
