Course story
Course story
Hugh Wilson was sent to study the great links of Britain and came back to build Merion on a compact piece of Pennsylvania ground. It remains one of the shortest courses to host a modern US Open and one of the most respected, because length was never the point. The bunkers, known as the white faces of Merion, are ragged and deep. The closing three holes are as hard as any in America. Merion also keeps a quiet tradition: wicker baskets on top of the pins rather than flags, which means a player reading the wind has to work it out themselves. Ben Hogan's 1 iron into the 18th in 1950 is the most famous approach shot in the game.
