Course story

Jack Neville and Douglas Grant routed Pebble Beach in 1919 by walking the headland and following it, which is why the course spends so much of itself on the cliff edge. The 7th is the shot everyone knows: barely more than a hundred yards, downhill, straight into whatever the Pacific is doing that afternoon. The 8th and 9th sit above a drop that makes the yardage feel irrelevant. What separates Pebble Beach from the other courses golfers dream about is that this one lets them on. People save for it, book it a year out, and talk about it long afterwards. A print of it tends to mark a round that actually happened.
