Course story

Pete Dye built the Stadium Course at PGA West in 1986 and was not asked to hold back. Bunkers nineteen feet deep, greens defended by water on every side, and the 17th, called Alcatraz, an island green ringed with rock where the only sensible miss is no miss at all. When the PGA Tour first played it, the professionals complained enough that it was dropped from the rotation after a single year. It later returned. For a course in the desert outside La Quinta, it has generated an unusual amount of argument about how hard golf should reasonably be.
