Kikuyu grass, a barranca, and the best short par 4 in golf. Riviera sits in a canyon in Los Angeles and feels entirely separate from it.

Course story

George Thomas built Riviera in a canyon below Pacific Palisades in 1926, and the setting does most of the work: steep walls, eucalyptus, a clubhouse looking down from the rim. The course is known for two holes in particular. The 6th has a bunker in the middle of the green, which sounds like a gimmick and plays like a genuine problem. The 10th is barely 300 yards and remains the most discussed short par 4 in the professional game, because every option available is slightly wrong. The kikuyu grass is thick enough to change how the ball comes out of the rough entirely.
