Course story
Course story
Shinnecock Hills dates to 1891, which makes it one of the oldest clubs in America, though the course golfers recognise today is William Flynn's 1931 redesign. It sits high and open on Long Island with very little shelter, so the wind is the main architect on any given day. Fescue runs right to the edges of the fairways and the greens sit on natural rises rather than built platforms. The clubhouse, designed by Stanford White, looks down over the whole property. US Opens here are routinely the hardest of the cycle, and the course needs no adjustment to make them so.
